In the choice of the fields of research, the emphasis is laid on applied research work and product development in the expanding branches of activity in South Ostrobothnia. Particular support is given to nationally new, interdisciplinary fields of research connecting information technology and the strong industries (metal, food and wood ) of the region.
The research projects focus on the following fields:
· IT applications
· Economics and business administration
· R & D and marketing of food industry
· Regions and welfare
Each area of research will be covered by at least two research professorships. Each research professor will lead a research team of 3–5 researchers.

The research groups will form an exciting research community combining several disciplines and universities, whose networks reach the entire Finnish and international scientific world through the member universities. The Technology Village, currently being built on the river Seinäjoki, and its Campus will form the core of the research community.
